The Best Way to Move a Piano -- Any Why We Do It!

The new season is a great reason to make and keep resolutions. Whether it’s eating right or cleaning out the garage, here are some tips for making and keeping resolutions.

Moving a piano requires careful planning and execution to ensure its safety and prevent any damage. Here are some steps we take to move a piano:

  1. Gather the necessary equipment: You will use a sturdy dolly or piano skid, furniture straps or heavy-duty rope, moving blankets, padding materials (such as foam or bubble wrap), and a toolbox with basic tools.
  2. Prepare the piano: We remove all loose and detachable parts, such as the lid, legs, and pedals. We safely store these parts separately. We also close and secure the keyboard lid.
  3. Measure and plan the route: We measure the piano and all doorways, hallways, and staircases involved in the move. We will ensure that the piano can fit through all passages without any obstructions. It’s important to clear the path of any obstacles or tripping hazards.
  4. Enlist the help of professionals: Anytime you move a piano it is a challenging task that requires strength and expertise. Hiring professional piano movers is highly recommended, as they have the necessary experience, equipment, and techniques to safely move the instrument.
  5. Protect the piano: We wrap pianos in moving blankets or padded materials to protect it from scratches, bumps, and temperature changes. We also secure the blankets using heavy-duty tape or straps, and use additional padding around the corners and edges for extra protection.
  6. Position the piano on the dolly: Placing the dolly or piano skid near one end of the piano is very important. We lift the piano carefully, with the help of several technicians, and position it onto the dolly. We ensure that the piano is balanced and stable on the dolly.
  7. Secure the piano: We will use furniture straps or heavy-duty rope to secure the piano tightly to the dolly. This prevents any movement or shifting during the move.
  8. Move the piano: With our team, we will carefully maneuver the dolly or piano skid along the planned route. Moving slowly and with caution is very important, especially when navigating stairs or uneven surfaces. We will maintain communication with you or your team throughout the process.
  9. Unload and reassemble: Once we have reached the piano's new location, we carefully unload it from the dolly or skid. We reassemble any detachable parts that were removed earlier, such as the legs and pedals. We are sure to take our time to ensure everything is properly attached.
  10. Tune the piano: After the move, we can have a professional piano tuner inspect and tune the instrument. Often we find that the process of moving can affect the piano's pitch and tuning.

Remember, if you are uncertain about moving a piano on your own, it's always best to hire professional piano movers who specialize in this task. They have the expertise and equipment to ensure the safe transportation of your valuable instrument.
